Beam Dump for Neutrino Observation in High-Energy Accelerators
Graphite has high heat resistance and light weight, and is also strong against radiation and has the property of slowing down fast neutrons. Taking advantage of these characteristics, graphite beam dumps are used in neutrino observation experiments with accelerators and other applications for the purpose of blocking radiation and absorbing and neutralizing high-energy particle beams.
What is a Beam Dump?
A beam dump is a device used in accelerator experiments to safely absorb unwanted particles and energy, protecting the experimental environment and researchers.
The product consists of modules made by stacking 670×450×1027mm blocks in 2 columns and 7 rows, and the overall size including the aluminium cooling modules is 3170×2130×4690mm.
The graphite blocks must be stacked 7 layers high without gaps to prevent radiation leakage, requiring high machining precision.
In the neutrino observation experiment at Super-Kamiokande (T2K experiment), our graphite beam dump was adopted due to its high energy conversion efficiency and high machining precision.
